On Saturday, March 7, 2020, the Greater Raleigh Component and the Durham-Orange Component teamed up together with dental hygiene students from Wake Technical Community College and UNC Adams School of Dentistry, at the 5K Race for Education, benefiting the Carrboro/Chapel Hill public schools.
The event began with a short parade around the square of children led by the mascots of their middle and elementary schools. Some participants dressed as “Cavity Crushers”, in purple capes and ran the race whose hilly route highlighted UNC landmarks like Boshamer baseball stadium, Kenan football stadium, and the Old Well. Several dental hygiene students handed out over 600 oral health products and educational materials to race participants and parents. As an added bonus, we were fortunate to meet a 7 month old golden retriever puppy who was being trained as a dental therapy dog. We were able to educate the public about therapy dogs, and provide positive success stories of how Grayson, UNC’s dental therapy dog, has had calming children needing extensive treatment at UNC Adam’s School of Dentistry!
